Dental veneers on the Gold Coast

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front of teeth to change their colour, shape or size. Some natural tooth is usually trimmed first, so they can't simply be taken off. It's a decision worth taking time over, and leaving your teeth as they are is a reasonable choice too.

What veneers can change

  • Teeth that are deeply stained and haven't responded to whitening
  • Chipped or worn front teeth
  • Small gaps between front teeth
  • Teeth that are an uneven shape or size

Veneers don't fix decay, straighten teeth or correct your bite.

How veneers are done

  1. Consultation

We check the health of your teeth and gums, talk about what you'd like to change, and go through the alternatives, risks and costs. You can take time to decide.

  2. Planning

We take photos and a scan or impressions, and agree the shade and shape with you.

  3. Preparing the teeth

For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front of each tooth. Temporary veneers may protect your teeth while yours are made.

  4. Fitting

One to two weeks later, we try the veneers in, check the fit, shape and colour, then bond them to your teeth.

  5. Review

We may ask you back a couple of weeks later to check how they've settled.

Other options to consider

Depending on what you'd like to change, one of these may suit you better. Leaving your teeth as they are is a reasonable choice too.

  • Teeth whitening

Lightens natural teeth without removing any enamel. Worth trying first if colour is your main concern.

  • Resin bonding

Tooth-coloured resin built up directly on the tooth to repair a small chip or close a small gap, with little or no trimming.

  • Clear aligners

If teeth are crooked rather than misshapen, straightening them keeps your natural enamel.

  • A crown

Covers the whole tooth. Better suited to a tooth that's weak, cracked or heavily filled.

Good to know

Porcelain or composite?

Composite veneers are built up on the tooth in one visit. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and take at least two visits. Porcelain generally lasts longer and costs more.

When veneers may not suit

If you grind or clench your teeth, or have gum disease or decay, veneers may not be suitable until those are treated, or at all.

Whiten first

Whitening won't change the colour of a veneer. If you'd like lighter teeth overall, whiten first so new veneers can be matched to the lighter shade.

Caring for veneers

Brush and floss as normal, keep up check-ups, and tell your dentist if you grind your teeth, as a night guard may be recommended.

Risks to know about

Veneers are a cosmetic procedure that permanently changes your teeth. Before deciding, it's worth knowing what can go wrong.

  • Teeth can become more sensitive, because some enamel is removed.
  • Removing enamel can't be undone, so a tooth prepared for a porcelain veneer will always need a veneer or crown.
  • A veneer can chip, crack or come off.
  • If your gums shrink back over time, the edge of a veneer may show.
  • A veneer's colour can't be changed once it's fitted, so your natural teeth may gradually stop matching it.
  • Veneers eventually need repairing or replacing.

After your veneers are fitted

  • Expect some sensitivity for a few days.
  • Avoid biting hard things such as ice, pens or fingernails with veneered teeth.
  • Brush and floss as normal and keep up regular check-ups.

Questions about veneers

How long do veneers last?

With care, veneers can last for years, and porcelain generally lasts longer than composite. They'll eventually need repairing or replacing. Grinding and biting hard things shorten their life.

Can veneers be removed?

Not really. Porcelain veneers usually need some enamel removed, so the tooth will always need a veneer or crown. Composite veneers may need little or no trimming.

Is getting veneers painful?

Teeth are usually numbed with local anaesthetic while they're prepared for porcelain veneers. Some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common.

How many veneers will I need?

It depends on what you'd like to change. Some people have one; others have several front teeth done. We'll talk it through at your consultation.

Will my health fund cover veneers?

Many funds don't cover purely cosmetic treatment. Ask us for a written quote with item numbers and check with your fund.
