Dental implants on the Gold Coast

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth's root. Once healed, it can hold a crown, a bridge or a denture. It's one of three main ways to replace a tooth, alongside a bridge and a denture.

We assess and plan implant treatment here. Implants are placed at our sister clinic in Robina.

Who implants can suit

  • Adults missing one or more teeth
  • Enough jawbone to hold the implant, or a plan to build it up
  • Healthy gums, with any gum disease treated first
  • Good general health, and ideally not smoking

Tell us if you have diabetes, osteoporosis, a bleeding disorder, gum disease or cancer, if you smoke, or if you're over 60, as these can affect healing and the chance of complications.

How implant treatment works

  1. Assessment and planning

We check your teeth, gums and bone with X-rays, and a 3D scan if needed, review your health and medicines, and compare an implant with a bridge or denture, including costs.

  2. Placing the implant

Under local anaesthetic, the implant is placed in the jawbone. Some people need bone grafting first.

  3. Healing

The bone grows around the implant over about three months. For two to three weeks you'll usually eat soft food and clean the area with a mouthwash rather than brushing it.

  4. The crown

Once healed, a connector called an abutment is fitted, and a custom crown is made and attached.

  5. Looking after it

Brush twice a day, clean around the implant with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, and keep up check-ups.

Implant, bridge or denture?

  • A dental implant

Replaces the root and supports a crown on its own, so the teeth next to the gap aren't involved. Involves surgery and a few months of healing.

  • A bridge

Fixed to the teeth either side of the gap, which are reshaped and crowned to hold it. No surgery.

  • A denture

Removable, needs no surgery, and can replace several teeth at once.

Good to know

Planning ahead

If a tooth needs to come out and you may want an implant later, mention it before the extraction so the timing can be planned.

Questions worth asking

Who will place the implant, and who will fit the crown? What training do they have? Will I need bone grafting? What are the risks for me? What's the total cost, and what are the item numbers?

Get a written quote

Implants cost more upfront than other options. Ask for a written quote with item numbers and check what your fund will pay. Eligible veterans with a DVA Gold or White Card may be able to claim some costs.

Risks to know about

Implant treatment involves surgery. Your dentist should explain these risks and the alternatives so you can make an informed decision.

  • Bruising, pain and swelling of the gums or face in the days after surgery.
  • Infection around the implant.
  • Nerve damage, which can cause numbness or tingling in the lip, chin or tongue.
  • Sinus problems when implants are placed in the upper jaw.
  • Damage to nearby teeth.
  • The implant not joining with the bone, so it has to be removed. Smoking and some health conditions raise this risk.

After surgery

  • Eat soft food and chew on the other side while it heals.
  • Use the mouthwash you're given around the implant instead of brushing it for the first two to three weeks.
  • Once healed, brush twice a day and clean around the implant every day.
  • Keep up regular check-ups, and have any swelling or bleeding gum around the implant checked.

Call us if

  • Swelling or pain that's getting worse after the first few days
  • Bleeding that won't stop
  • Numbness that doesn't wear off
  • An implant or crown that feels loose

Questions about dental implants

How long does implant treatment take?

From placement to the final crown usually takes several months, because the bone needs about three months to grow around the implant. Bone grafting adds time.

Is having an implant placed painful?

It's done under local anaesthetic, so the area is numb during the procedure. Bruising, pain and swelling for a few days afterwards are normal.

How long do implants last?

Implants are usually successful, and good home care and regular check-ups help them last. The crown attached to an implant can wear and may need replacing over time.

Can I have an implant if I've lost bone?

Often, yes. Bone grafting can build up the area first, though it adds time and cost. Your dentist will assess this with X-rays or a scan.

Will my health fund cover an implant?

Some policies with major dental cover pay part of the cost. Check with your fund before you start, using the item numbers on your written quote.

Do you place implants at this clinic?

No. We assess you here and talk through every option, including a bridge or denture. If an implant suits you, it's placed at our sister clinic in Robina.
